The commemorative stamp series of 1956 highlighted not only famous images of what is considered to be Irish in nature, such as the Easter Lily, but also highlighted major leaders in Irish history, one of which being Thomas Davis. Davis was an Irish writer; he is credited with creating the culture of modern Irish nationalism that we know today. He established an Irish nationalist newspaper, The Nation, in which he preached unity between Catholics and Protestants, declaring that “Ireland shall be a nation” when the Irish people are willing to co-exist with one another. He believed that the notion of blood sacrifice for the future of Ireland was untrue and believed in a peaceful unity. He was also the chief organizer of the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848. The Rebellion itself was a failure, much like the ones before it, however, this Rebellion, which can also be referred to as the Famine Rebellion, inspired John O’Mahony to travel to America, where he established the Fenian Brotherhood in 1858. In Ireland, the Rebellion inspired the creation of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB).
