Christmas Cards

Additionally, Christmas cards were an interesting way to commemorate and contain very bold messages. Both of these Christmas greeting cards were sold during the time of the Rising in 1916.

On the first card there are many distinct symbols used to convey central ideas such as the harp, the dove, the red hand, and the cross in the center. On the second card, the Sinn Fein group is clearly represented, as well as the tricolor flag.  Also notable is the soldier holding the flag and his uniform. The second card depicts a soldier from the Sinn Fein army and the Irish flag with the slogan, “Sinn Fein Aboo,” meaning, “Sinn Fein Forever”. (Note: these cards were available from the Sinn Fein Bookshop website, but are no longer sold).
