International Connection

At first glance, the international murals can be divided into two categories: those which interpolate viewers into their imaginings of history, generally by identifying individuals of various nationalities and manipulating them as symbols (“A Tribute to John Hume,” “Frederick Douglass…”), and those which make direct political statements (“Askatasuna…”). However, this distinction is a fairly superficial one. All of these murals are engaged in the constant reimagining of Ireland as a historical and cultural entity, and in the case of the international murals, are doing this through comparison and association with international figures or circumstances. Even though some of these murals do not seem to be focused on Ireland at all, they cannot be divorced from the significance that their inclusion in the tradition of mural painting and physical location lends them.
