The effects of the hunger strike were profound because of how far it reached around the world. The strikes brought the conversation of an Irish Republic to an international stage. This was important because it then put the British Parliament on the international stage. However, it did little to nothing to sway the Prime Ministers, Margaret Thatcher, view on the matter. Even with constant demand from the prisoners for the “Five Demands” Margaret Thatcher and her government did not give in. As time past more bodies had accumulated from the strike. The government was slowly breaking. It was on October 3rd of that same did the strike officially come to an end. The remaining prisoners were given some points of the “Five Demands”. The prisoners were allowed to wear their own clothes as well as restored remission. Additionally, the hunger strikes gave rise to Sinn Fein and gave a much more official appeal. Through the death of Bobby Sands, Sinn Fein garnered a lot of attention. All of this was however at the cost of human lives.
