The Irish National War Memorial Garden a memorial located in Islandbridge, Dublin which is dedicated to the memory of the 49,400 Irish soldiers who gave their lives in the Great War. The history of the garden is a long, complicated one with the garden finally being opened to the public in 1940, 22 years after the war. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens who had previously conceptualized and designed other sites throughout Ireland and Europe. The function of the memorial is an all-Irish one designated to memorialize all the Irish who fought and died in WWI, this including those not physically within Ireland itself such as Irish Americans and those of Irish heritage within the United Kingdom.
