The most prominent aspect of the park is the 110 foot tall tower which is in the traditional design of an Irish round tower, a symbol for Ireland itself, and is built with from stone from each of the 32 counties of Ireland. The Tower’s design has a unique aspect in that it allows the sun to light the interior only on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the anniversary of the armistice that ended the war. In addition to the tower there are 13 other stone statues throughout the park. There are three pillars which the list the dead of the three Irish divisions to serve in the British army: the 13th Ulster Division, the 16th Irish Division and the 10th Irish Division. There is another tablet which lists the counties of Ireland, where all 36 names flow together in attempt to suggest the unity of death. There are also another nine tablets displyaing prose, poems and letters from Irish servicemen.
The design and layout of this park fulfills the intentions of its construction which was to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers and act as a modern-day reconciliation between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. Through purposely constructing the park to give even deference to both parts of Ireland it attempts to demonstrate their unity and similarity rather than their differences. (1)
