The band was founded in 1962, originally under the name The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group. They are internationally known for their lively Irish folk songs, traditional street ballads and instrumentals. They often performed political songs that were considered controversial at the time, which drew criticism from folk purists. Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ placed an unofficial ban on their music from 1967–71.
However, through the 70’s they were able to stay popular and make appearances throughout Europe. They are the instrumental reason Irish folk music is popular all around Europe. They have greatly influenced bands such as the Dropkick Murphys and The Pogues.
