The band was formed in 1963 by former member Derek Warfield. The name of the band was inspired by the Irish rebel and patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
Unfortunately the group split because of artistc differences. Derek went on to create the Young Wolf Tones while the rest of the members continued to tour until 2014. The group still attends special events such as the commemmoration ceremony for the 1916 uprising.
